Free talk.

Show Ss some pictures about6 greetings and ask them to talk the question:

What do people in different places do when they meet for the first time? Like in Brazil, Korea, the United States, etc.

Step 1

Activity 1a.

Ask Ss to match the countries with the customs.

Step 2

Activity 1b.

Let Ss listen to the tape and check the answers in 1a.

Step 3

Listen again and fill in the blanks..

Step 4

Pair works.

Show Ss some pictures and ask them to make sentences based on the information in 1a.

E.g.:

A: What are people in Korea supposed to do when they meet for the first time?

B: They’re supposed to bow.

Step 5

Activity 2a.

Listen and number the inventions in the order you hear.

Step 6

Activity 2a.

Listen and check the mistakes Maria made.

Step 7

Let Ss listen again and then fill in the blanks.

Step 8

Pair works.

Let Ss role-play the conversation between Maria and Dan by using the information from 2a and 2b.

e.g. :

A: How was the dinner at Paul’s house last night?

B: Well, it was OK, but I made some mistakes. I was supposed to arrive at 7:00, but I arrived at 8:00.

Ask Ss to talk about the question:

What are you supposed to do if you are invited to a friend’s house?

Let Ss read the conversation and answer the questions.

Ask Ss to role-play a conversation by reading after the tape.

Introduce to Ss about the greetings in France.

Show Ss some pictures about the greetings, like shaking hands, bow, kiss, etc.
